The smirk on Minoru's face all but screamed that this was the asexual equivalent of a dirty joke.
Meanwhile, he climbed onto his stomach on the board-chair that Vars was still holding in place. He had the core strength to hold that position. And given the shape of a skateboard, it wasn’t such a bad idea, really. (Aside from all the obvious ways this was already a bad idea, but nobody here would think of those.)
Aarne reached out and roughed up Minoru's hair like he did so often to Rik. "I wouldn't want to make Stardust jealous because I'm putting my legs up for his boyfriend."
Aarne is teasing, dirty, because he can. Vars got up and slid the chair he was siting on toward the Fin before he starts walking down the ramp with the camera. He's going down to get some pictures of the wrecks that were inevitable.
Aarne sat down on the contraption and scooted it to the edge of the top of the ramp.
"Ready?" Aarne is looking down at the first tight curve in the ramp wondering how he is going to steer, maybe with his foot like tight turns on a motorcycle.
Oh, this was sizing up to be both a great and terrible idea, all at the same time.
Looking at the same curve, Minoru’s idea was to lean like Balthazar showed him how to on a skateboard. And to use his hands and feet to spring off of the wall if he had to. It was such a long ramp that they probably weren’t going to pick up too much speed too quickly.
Famous last thoughts, perhaps. Watch out for a spinny starfish.
"I was born ready for this." Aarne put his feet down and tested pushing the skate-chair back and forth to test it. The spin was going to be hellish like one of those coasters that teacup on the tracks. Rik would love this. If he survives maybe he should get the Dane too.
There's silence for a moment as Vars finds a good angle to get pictures at the turn. Turns always wrecked races.
"3....2...1.... Come on."
At Vars' countdown Aarne pushed off over the edge and onto the slope. The angle wasn't that steep but maybe it was Aarne's weight? He felt like he was picking up speed in a hurry. As he careens down the straight he briefly thinks about how much better this would be if the walls were padded like a bumper.
As Vars finished his countdown, Minoru pushed off, lifting his legs and letting himself glide down the first part of the incline.
The angle was indeed deceiving. These chair boards were going a bit faster than he expected them to. Immediately, he started leaning to see if he could steer. It kind of worked... but Aarne had taken an early lead while he slid partially over to one side.
Laughing and squealing, he leaned sharply the other way as he went into the turn. He did, in fact, turn! But he also started spinning in the chair!
Which only made him laugh harder as he relaxed his arms and legs to push off of whatever he might hit next.
Aarne was so glad he wasn't standing as he careened toward the wall and had to push off the wall with his feet. It was a good choice until he realized it meant he was now going backward down the incline. It got a laugh out of the Fin who tucked his feet up to sit cross-legged on the board.
Watching Minoru spin recklessly like a drunken Superman was almost as funny as his own predicament of spinning ever faster as he sat on the board. Every time he gets close to a wall, Aarne shoves off to make himself go faster. This might be the worst or best idea ever.
They might have been in different positions, but their methods of steering (or not steering, technically) were completely the same.
“Woohooo!! THIS IS AWESOME!!” Minoru screamed as he pushed himself into another spin.
This was less of a race now, and more like a game of human pinball, but he didn’t care. He easily settled into that sweet spot of engaging his core enough to stay on the board while being relaxed enough to absorb the impact with his arms or legs.
Aarne had sent himself into a continuous spin like some wild teacup ride at an amusement park. He felt dizzy but every time he saw Minoru in his spins he got the same idea. How could this be effectively turned into a bumper car scenario?
Aarne isn't screaming but laughing like he's off his rocker, which is probably at least partially true. As he comes toward the wall this time he shoves with both his hands and feet right into the direction Minoru is moving. Like everything up to this point in the night, this may be a fun idea that is also an incredibly bad idea.
Using skateboards welded on rolling chairs as go karts was one thing. Using them as bumper cars? That was definitely not what any of they were designed for...
Aarne hit Minoru right on the ass. But instead of knocking him further down the ramp or even into another wall, the impact sent him and the skateboard chair toppling over. He flew forward, head first with a surprised shriek, but instinctively managed to tuck and roll. A couple of times actually.
Aarne thought it would be fun and wasn't thinking about the inevitable wreck. He's laughing as he bumps into the back of Minoru's chair but that is short lived.
One of his chair's wheels locked up on the leg of Minoru's and stopped instantly. Aarne pitched forward at the same speed he had been moving. He screams as he careens face first toward the ramp. Unlike Minoru, the Fin doesn't know to tuck but long arms and legs means he has plenty of time to catch himself before he face plants.
Vars is laughing and taking pictures of the madness taking place on the ramp. He can't wait to see the photos he gets. Hopefully, some of the ridiculous expressions as they wrecked.
Minoru came to a surprisingly soft stop on his back. He sat up, shaking his head and the resulting dizziness away. There was little damage to assess, just a few scrapes with their all-too-familiar sting. It felt like his shirt had torn around the back of his right shoulder, but he couldn’t get a good glimpse of that just looking back.
And when he looked, he was far more distracted by his fellow racer-turned-speedbump. And Vars with his camera.
“That was like, what, a floor and a half? Two? Hardly a photo finish.” He scoffed. His tone was serious, though, when he asked, “You okay, Aarne?”
"Wrecks best part of race." Vars tells Minoru, partially because Aarne and Rik have dragged him to motorcycle and car races enough that he appreciates huge wrecks. Both of them are moving or Vars would check on them.
Aarne is starting to get up and shaking out his, now even crazier, hair. He's not bleeding except a little road rash on his one elbow but it isn't bad at all.
"Are you?" He asks as he sits up against the wall. He was starting to get back up and get back on the board chair.
“Yeah.” Minoru climbed back to his feet, stretching things out and rolling his shoulders a few times. “But my ride’s not.”
He righted his skateboard chair, only to find the board hanging loosely to the side. Aarne must have hit at just the right angle to do some damage. That, or the ground did.
Minoru was more bummed about that than the crash, obviously. Could it be fixed? Could it be fixed quickly enough that no one in a position of authority had time to put a stop to their awesomely terrible idea?
Then suddenly, he looked up with a big grin. “Guess that means we’re riding tandem after all!! Come on! Scoot up! Let me on!”
“All right!” Minoru saw no problems with that idea whatsoever, and quickly bounced over. “This time, you gotta hold onto me.”
He got himself situated, pausing only long enough to pose for Vars. Then, he pushed off with his legs to get the chair moving again. It took a little bit to build up the momentum, but with two of them on one board-chair, once they got going, they’d really get going!
Aarne wraps his arms around Stardust's boyfriend and laughs at the posing, nuzzling his face against Minoru's laughing like they're crazy because they surely are.
"Do you think we could maintain a spin without flipping?" Aarne asks as they start picking up speed. It was going to happen faster and faster because of the added weight.
He leaned into the corner so they wouldn't go crashing into the wall. But still tried to push off a little with his foot. Hopefully that would get them turning too.
This is probably a stupid idea given the extra weight but with one arm, and longer reach, he gives an added push to get them spinning. If they spin, they do, and if not he will still be giggling.
"Do you go to amusement parks?" He's been to a few since Rik was a rollercoaster addict. They hit every park they could, every coaster they could find.
That first corner didn't quite get them spinning, but he'd try it again on the next one, with a little more push and a little less lean.
"When I get the chance, yeah!" he laughed. "There weren't any good amusement parks in Seattle. But there was one not too far from where Isamu did undergrad!"
Clearly, Minoru made up for some lost time at Six Flags America and didn't get himself kicked out for any outlandish stunts. (not permanently, anyway...)
Aarne will do what he can to help get the chair spinning, if they can.
"You should have told us." Aarne feels sad that he didn't know. "Rik and I go all the time. He has rode most of the rollercoasters in the world. Next is the Steel Dragon 2000 in Japan."
Aarne had rode most of the roller coasters too because Rik always wanted someone to come along.
"Next time!!" he insisted, but couldn't say much more. The words were drowned out by an energetic cheer, as their next attempt at getting the chair-board spinning was a resounding success!
Not that they could really steer while spinning. As if they actually needed to steer in the first place. Get that camera ready Vars - there's a wall dead ahead!
Next time for sure, now that they knew. Aarne is enjoying the spinning until he realizes the wall is coming up fast. His instinct is to put one of his feet out, but Minoru is in his lap, sitting on them.
"FUUUUCK!" He's hoping the spin lets him get his arms out to the wall or this is going to be a spectacular wreck right into the wall.
Minoru has his hands free to brace and his legs free to push off, but whether that'll do any good will depend entirely on what direction they just happen to be when they collide. And spinning like an out-of-control amusement park teacup, that was anybody's guess.
They were lucky that they hit toward the side, making for a surprisingly effective push off!
From one wall.
Right into the path of the other wall. Because that's how physics works. (Minoru could hear Isamu lecturing him about it now...)
They have gone directly maniac teacup to pinball. The benefit to doing something like this is his arms long and very strong from drumming. He manages to get an arm out to push when they almost collide into the other wall but it now has them going down the ramp backwards with no sign of spinning to get them to a more advantageous position.
Vars can't keep up unless they wreck but he is looking down from above with the camera laughing at Aarne screaming profanities as they are now in a prime position to wipe-out spectacularly.
